The new art of  Medieval Heraldry made it possible for families and even individual family members to have their very own coat of arms.  This came into existence in the early centuries.

 

Although there is evidence to indicate that armorial heraldry was introduced into Norman Sicily some decades following its introduction into Norman England  the contrary is suggested by the early use of certain heraldic symbols, namely the lion of the Norman Kings of England . The lion was depicted on coat of arms suggesting the use in England.

 

The medieval coat of arms was very similar to the oldest Italian coats of arms depicted in medieval rolls and seals, or engraved in relief on the walls of castles and other structures during the Middle Ages. The designs were remarkably simpler than the ornate Renaissance and Baroque imagery identified with Italian armory today.

 

 

The Griffin coat of arms came into existence centuries ago.  Usually of Welsh origin.  The head, wings, and talons of an eagle with the body of a lion, is what the Griffin looked like. The Griffin stands for velour and death-defying bravery.
